PLUSSM for Design & Security Professionals
PLUS is a voluntary rating program that provides an independent evaluation of a facility's level of protection against a range of security threats.
PLUS uses a multidisciplinary approach when assessing levels of protection. It evaluates a facility's
- Architectural & engineering features
- Landscaping features
- Operations & maintenance (O&M) procedures
- Security controls & procedures
PLUS is the first program to use a rigorous, quantified approach to evaluate building security.
PLUS uses 5 progressive rating categories to denote security levels:
- Rated
- Bronze
- Silver
- Gold
- Platinum
PLUS Ratings = Combination of Building Classification + Security Countermeasures
A PLUS rating consists of 2 major components:
- Building Classification (Relative Risk)
- Reflects a facility's attractiveness to terrorist attacks and major security incidents and the impact or consequences of a major security incident.
- Measures risk quantitatively and qualitatively.
- Uses 4 building classification classes to denote risk: A (high), B (medium), C (low) and D (minimum).
- Relies on threat and impact factors
- Threat factors = attractiveness to major security incidents
- Impact factors = consequence of a major security threat
- Security Countermeasures (Mitigation Steps)
- A facility's defense system against major security incidents
- Must deter, detect, delay or provide a defense against major security incidences.
- Architectural, structural & landscaping features
- Operations & maintenance procedures & practices
- Security control, detection & screening devices or systems
