PLUSSM for Design & Security Professionals

PLUS is a voluntary rating program that provides an independent evaluation of a facility's level of protection against a range of security threats.

PLUS uses a multidisciplinary approach when assessing levels of protection. It evaluates a facility's

  • Architectural & engineering features
  • Landscaping features
  • Operations & maintenance (O&M) procedures
  • Security controls & procedures

PLUS is the first program to use a rigorous, quantified approach to evaluate building security.

PLUS uses 5 progressive rating categories to denote security levels:

  • Rated
  • Bronze
  • Silver
  • Gold
  • Platinum

PLUS Ratings = Combination of Building Classification + Security Countermeasures

A PLUS rating consists of 2 major components:

  • Building Classification (Relative Risk)
    • Reflects a facility's attractiveness to terrorist attacks and major security incidents and the impact or consequences of a major security incident.
    • Measures risk quantitatively and qualitatively.
    • Uses 4 building classification classes to denote risk: A (high), B (medium), C (low) and D (minimum).
    • Relies on threat and impact factors
  • Security Countermeasures (Mitigation Steps)
    • A facility's defense system against major security incidents
    • Must deter, detect, delay or provide a defense against major security incidences.
    • Architectural, structural & landscaping features
    • Operations & maintenance procedures & practices
    • Security control, detection & screening devices or systems
